The book makes readers think about how often they adjust their personality and actions just to please those around them. The story was not only great, but the message the book conveyed is very important.

Stargirl is unlike anyone, and that is what makes her so fascinating not only to Mica High School students but also to the reader. The unusual and sometimes startling things she does spark your interest and occasionally make you squirm in your seat.

The way Jerry Spinelli tells his story through Leo, a regular kid, makes the reader feel as if they are one of the students at Mica High School noticing Stargirl for the first time. She confuses most of the school with her whimsical and unpredictable personality. This peculiar girl goes by the name “Stargirl”. The book is narrated by Leo, a regular teenage boy who becomes very interested with this peculiar new girl at his school. Jerry Spinelli’s book “Stargirl” tells the story of an unusual teenage girl who, after homeschooling her entire life, starts attending Mica High School in a small, Arizona town. Because of the curious title I decided to borrow the book from the library. A great first-issue setup and a must-read for horror fans. This past semester I took a children’s literature class that introduced me to a plethora of young adult novels “Stargirl” by Jerry Spinelli being one of them. Good horror should fill you with an unmistakable anxious panic as the story goes on, and that’s precisely what Survival does. While this book should not be labeled as an extreme horror story, plenty of parts will make you feel a bit uncomfortable as goosebumps settle in and you go back to re-read and stare at the panels. But don’t mistake this for just another horror comic on the shelves. Sean Lewis sets the pace with a tempo that is equal parts action and horror rolled into one with a social aspect one would expect from Lewis’ writing. While Emma and her father begin triaging personnel, we are shown a clearer vision of what kind of evil Emma and Co. As we get to know her father and the company he keeps, the picture (or so we think) starts to take shape until all hell breaks loose. The art sets a delightful, maddening tone for Sean Lewis’ characters, whether it’s the facial expressions or the brilliant environment work.Įmma Reed is headed home from college with some friends to see her grizzled woodsman father at their yearly veteran gathering.

This is where Everett and Barahona shine like the Northern Lights. Survival #1 is filled with fascinating art that perfectly captures the book’s mood, startingthe remote town of Talkeetna, Alaska, shortly after a mysterious plane crashes. They are accompanied by Bryndon Everett (art), Natalie Barahona (colors), and Ed Dukeshire (letters). Sean Lewis’ latest offering, Survival #1 from Dark Horse, is a mile-a-minute horror thrill ride.
